Diwali: Bringing Light to the Darkest Day of the Lunar Year

Diwali, otherwise known as the festival of lights, shines thousands of lights on the darkest day of the lunar year. A lunar year is a calendar based on the cycles of the moon, instead of being based on the cycles of the sun, or the solar calendar. Diwali is a five-day celebration held in India, with the third day being the peak or the darkest day of the lunar year.

What makes Diwali so special?

Optimistic perspectives and new beginnings are ushered in with the celebration of Diwali. Hope over despair and the triumph of good versus evil are special lessons celebrated in this annual festival. People come from all over the world to celebrate and share the best Indian cuisine. This Indian holiday is so treasured that several preparations take place before attending the festival. There is the lighting of candles that represents a sort of casting out of the darkness. Darkness is said to hold ignorance and all evil, so the lighting of the candles is a symbolic ritual.

Sharing Indian Cuisine

During the most special time of year, people unite to share Indian dishes amongst each other. Poha is flattened rice that is typically served as an Indian breakfast. You’ll be expressing knowledge over ignorance when you find the perfect pineapple coconut sauce from Sambar Kitchen for your poha Diwali dish. On the first day of Diwali, there is a famous dish called lapsi halwa made from cracked wheat, sugar, and cardamom. Samosas are extremely popular during the festival and go down well with beer, such as the Chatty Monks sweet brews. The Chatty Monks beer distillery celebrated Diwali with a party in their Brewhouse located in Reading, PA. Their sweet ales go down well with the tradition of treats on Diwali.

Overall

Diwali is one of the most festive times of year in India and many dishes can be cooked to celebrate the season. The lessons of good over evil, knowledge over ignorance, and hope over despair can bring the renewal people need in their lives. This time of year shows how important food can be to Indian culture and how sharing it can bring fortune, foster new relationships, and create lasting memories. Celebrate Diwali with Sambar Kitchen and The Chatty Monks this year.
